How To Use This Catalog

All plants are listed alphabetically by their botanical (scientific) name.

The New Royal Horticultural Society Dictionary of Gardening is the currently accepted standard reference for authoritative plant names, and whenever possible we have conformed to their taxonomy. Many names commonly used by gardeners, and some previously accepted names are cross-referenced to their appropriate names.

ARRANGEMENT OF PLANT NAMES:

GENERA - Large Bold Type & Capital Letters

species - Small Bold Type & small initial

forms, subspecies, varieties - Small Bold Type & small initial, indented

'Cultivars'- Small Bold Type, indented, single quote marks

Hybrids- Intergeneric and species hybrids given a latin collective name are preceeded by a multiplication sign (x)

Where no collective name is available the cultivar name alone is used.

Common Names - are shown immediately following the botanic name. Only widely used names are shown.

EXAMPLE:

VIBURNUM (Genera)

x burkwoodii (species hybrid)

    'Mohawk’ (cultivar)

carlesii (species)

    'Aurora' (cultivar)

'Chesepeake' (cultivar name used where no hybrid collective name exists)

Hardiness Zones: These are derived from a variety of sources. We try to use the most liberal but reliable information available. To find your hardiness zone, see map on page

Sun and Shade Aspects: These are based on our experiences in the hot humid south-east. In cooler more northerly climates some plants may move into more sunlight than indicated.

Plant Descriptions: These are based on personal experience and observation, as well as standard references. See 'Where We Garden' for information related to our own experiences. See 'References' for a list of resources we use regularly in the course of our business.
