Japanese Flowering Cherries Zones 5-8 Sun to light shade

Cherries have been cultivated in Japan for thousands of years, and the origins of most of these hybrids are obscure.  They are small trees growing about 10’ in ten years.  They succeed in most any type soil in sun to light shade.

corymbosa - Little Epaulette Tree Zones 5-7 Sun to light shade

This rare small flowering tree has long chains of white flower clusters reminiscent of the shoulder decorations on old military uniforms.  A vigorous growing youth that makes 6-8’ of growth in ten years, and matures around 15’ tall.  Works well in small gardens with handsome leaf, smooth bark, and a late spring bloom time when little else is flowering. 

hispida - Fragrant Epaulette Zones 4-8 Sun to light shade

The full sized Epulette Tree grows larger and faster to 20-30’ tall, has longer white flower chains up to 10" long, and is more fragrant.  Leaves are large and very light green in color.  Excellent little known relative of the Styrax.  Awards: Award of Merit & Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.

Early Spiketail is well known and common in European gardens (and considered one of the finest winter flowering shrubs) but very rare in America.  Pale yellow flowers are cup shaped and displayed on long drooping racemes in very late winter or very early spring.  Grows 4-5’ in ten years, matures around 10 to 12 feet tall and wide with an upright arching habit.  Awards: First Class Certificate, Award of Merit, and Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: GCA.

rostrata - This

serrata - This stewartia makes a large shrub or small tree in time.  Grows 6-8’ in ten years.  The flowers are cupped shaped and a creamy white color with a red stain beneath.  The leaves have a distinct serrated edge and color up gloriously in the fall.  Awards: Award of Merit from the RHS.

 

STYRAX - Snowbell Zones 5-9 Sun to part shade

americanum - American Snowbell - This is an excellent native that grows more as a shrub than a tree and has dangling white bell-like flowers.  Slowly grows to 4-5’ in ten years, eventually reaching 10’ tall and may grow wider.   Very beautiful underused native.

japonicum - Japanese Snowbell - Small spreading tree with dangling white bell shaped flowers in the spring.   You will never forget gazing up into flowering branches of a snowbell tree.  8’-10 in ten years.  Older trees may get 20-30’ tall and wide.  This is the cream-of-the-crop in a remarkable genus.  Awards: First Class Certificate and Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: USNA.

‘Pink Chimes’- This is the pink flowered form of the Japanese Snowbell.   Slower growing to only 6-7’ in ten years, and more difficult to propagate.  With age it will flower plentifully, and is a spectacular addition to the garden.

obassia - Fragrant Snowbell - Larger leaves than other styrax and slow growing to 8’ in ten years, but capable of 20-30’ foot tall or more.  This tree grows best in some shade.  The fragrant flowers are extraordinary.  Awards: First Class Certificate from the RHS.  Recommended by: USNA.

Soft blue-green leaves and 6’ tall flower stalks in late summer.   Excellent accent plant.  Develops a short stalk over time and gains height to about 6’ tall.  3’-4’ in ten years.  Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the RHS. 

 

ZELKOVA
serrata - Japanese Zelkova - Zones 5-19 Sun to light shade

Zelkova is a medium to fast growing tree that develops an excellent vase shape with ascending branches.  Handsome dark green leaves turn yellow-orange-brown in the fall.  Foliage looks clean, stalwart, and healthy in all seasons.  Handsome bark on older trees.  Related to the elms, but more resistant to disease.  10’-15’ in ten years eventually reaching 30-40’ or more after many years.  Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: USNA.
