AKEBIA Zones 4-9 Sun to shade

quinata - Fiveleaf Akebia - Five-leaf Akebia is an evergreen (deciduous in the north) twining vine with chocolate colored flowers in early summer.  Extremely tough and adaptable to most conditions.  10’+ in ten years.  Awards: Award of Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: USNA.

 

AMPELOPSIS

brevipedunculata Zones 4-8 Sun to part shade

‘Elegans’ - Variegated Porcelin Vine - The leaves are mottled white with a tinge of pink on this beautiful clinging vine.  Lustrous blue berries in the fall add an extra dimension to this excellent plant.   Makes 10’+ of growth in ten years.   Recommended by: USNA.

 

BIGNONIA - Cross Vine Zones 6-9 Sun to Shade

caprolata - Cross Vine is handsome in foliage and in bloom.  Foliage is evergreen or mostly so, and the flowers are trumpet shaped and colored browinsh red or orange.  Climbs by twining and tendrils.  Awards: Award of Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: USN

‘Shalimar Red’ - Red flowers and repeating blooms.

‘Tangerine Beauty’ - An old variety reintroduced and promoted by JC Raulston at the University of North Carolina.  Flowers are a reddish tangerine color and are produced in abundance.

 

GELSEMIUM - Jessamine

rankinii- Swamp Jessamine - Zones 7-9 Sun to shade

A Jessamine that blooms twice each year - abundunt yellow flowers in March-April and then repeating again in the fall in October and November! Rare and hard to find. 

sempervirens - Carolina Jessamine - Zones 6-9 Sun to shade

Robust evergreen vine with fragrant yellow flowers in the spring.   Grows 10-12’ in ten years.  One of the best traditional southern vines.  Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: USNA

‘Pride of Augusta- This is a double flowered form.  The flowers look like minature yellow roses.  Recommended by: USNA

 

HYDRANGEA

petiolaris -Climbing Hydrangea Zones 4-8 Sun to shade

Many experts feel this is the finest climbing vine for our gardens.   We agree.  Admittedly it make take some time for it to first bloom, but the form and foliage are always useful.  Grows about 8-10’ in ten years.  Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: OPSC, USNA. 

 

JASMINUM - Jasmine

x stephanese - Zones 7-10 Sun to part shade

Not well known, this rapid growing twining vine has fragrant pink flowers in the spring.  Grows 10-15’ in ten years.  Awards: Award of Merit and Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.  Recommended by: USNA. 

 

LONICERA

x heckrotti Zones 4-9 Sun to part shade

‘Gold Flame’ - Fragrant pink flowers with a yellow throat emerge from darker red buds in the spring, with some flowers continuing into the summer and fall.  Blue-green leaves are evergreen to about 20 degrees, otherwise they are deciduous.  10’+’ in ten years.  Michael Dirr says it is "the most handsome of the climbing honeysuckles."

hydrangeoides - Hydrangea Vine -

Brookside Little Leaf’ - This clinging vine is related and very similar to the climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris).  This excellent cultivar has much smaller leaves than typical and this gives a different texture to the entire plant.  Grows 10’+ in ten years.

‘Moonlight’ - This rare cultivar has a silvery mottling on its early leaves that can help to liven up a shady spot.  Excellent climbing a tree.  Grows 10’+ in ten years.  Awards: Gold Medal from PHS.
